Kilimanjaro National Park, situated in the northeastern part of Tanzania between the equator and 3 degrees south latitude, near Kenya, was established in 1968 and spans an area of 756 square kilometers between 1800 meters and the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. It was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1979. Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest peak in Africa at 5895 meters, is referred to as the "Mount Everest of Africa" or the "Roof of Africa." Experts predict that the ice caps of Mount Kilimanjaro will completely disappear within the next 20 years. Some scientists believe that the volcano is warming up again, accelerating the melting process, while others think it is due to global warming. Regardless of the cause, it is undisputed that the glaciers of Mount Kilimanjaro are smaller than they were in the last century, and conservative estimates suggest that the ice cap of Mount Kilimanjaro will also disappear by 2200.

In 1987, based on the criteria for natural heritage selection (vii), Kilimanjaro National Park was approved by the UNESCO World Heritage Committee to be included in the "World Heritage List." The evaluation report (11th session of the World Heritage Committee) states:

Criterion (vii): Mount Kilimanjaro is one of the largest volcanoes in the world. It has three main volcanic peaks: Kibo, Mawenzi, and Shira. Its snow-capped peaks and glaciers are the highest in Africa. The mountain has five main vegetation zones from low to high: lower slopes, montane forests, moorlands, alpine deserts, and the summit. The entire mountain, including the montane forest zone, is very rich in species, especially mammals, many of which are endangered. Mount Kilimanjaro is considered an outstanding example of the best natural phenomena, with its height, physical form, snow cover, and isolation from the surrounding plains.
